Social Change

Racism-  1.prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. 2.The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

My project will be about racism and how it affects me and my family. This project will show how racism effects people of different colored skin such as tan skin and white skin. I come from a mix race family and experience a lot of prejudice because of my complexion; not being excepted my though of darker skin of which I share heritage which but they do not always count someone with different skin color as them as one of their own even if they have the same background.

Growing up I hated my skin and wanted to be dark skinned just like my sister for she was considered to be hispanic and I was not. As we grew up I started to realize that I wasn’t the only one who hated their skin: my sister hated hers two. She wished to be light skinned like me. she never liked playing with dolls with dark skin and only played with white dolls and called the dark skinned dolls ugly and I never played with white dolls only with dolls of dark skinned. As we got older that hatred faded away and we soon started to love the skin that we are in but people around us could only see us as the race we looked whenever I told anyone I was hispanic they told me I’m not because I don’t look like one and whenever my sister told anyone she was Italian she was told the same thing.

I want to show in my work that everyone experiences racism regardless of skin tone.
